Part of Bardstown Road to shut down to traffic for annual Zombie Walk

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- On Saturday, Aug. 29, thousands of zombies are expected to invade the Highlands for the 11th annual Zombie Walk.

The zombie attack started in 2005 as a way for two friends to celebrate their Aug. 29 birthday. Since then it has continued to grow, with thousands of zombies joining the party each year.

The walk means Bardstown Road from Eastern Parkway to Highland Avenue will be closed to traffic from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Nearby streets will also be affected by the event, which includes a block party one block north of Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive.

Last year the city had 40 extra LMPD officers on hand to handle the zombies and direct traffic.

"It's created some challenges for us, Major Mark Fox, 5th Division Commander. "Obviously, you've got the traffic issues to deal with."

Even though part of Bardstown Road is shut down to traffic for several hours to make way for the undead, business owners in the Highlands have told us they embrace it.
