JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A southern Indiana fire official is just back from a California deployment where wildfires are wreaking havoc on the northern part of the state.

Amir Mousavi is the safety director for the city of Jeffersonville. He's also the assistant fire chief for New Chapel Fire Department and he just spent four days in northern California where fire fighters are working to contain wild fires that have scorched nearly 12,000 square miles.

"We had fires raging, heavily,” said Mousavi.

His camp was in Shasta Valley, which is about six hours north of San Francisco.

Their camp was about two hours from the front lines but he says the fires are apparent from hundreds of miles away.

“The camp was covered with smoke most of the time. Your nose is always dried up. Your eyes are always dried up,” he said.

Fires are also burning in Washington, Montana and Idaho, and firefighters from all over the world are being deployed to help.

“They've activated the Canadian fire forces, Australian, New Zealand and the Mexican fire force,” he told WDRB.

Mousavi says he got full support from the City of Jeffersonville.

He says the skills he learned at the wildfires can be applied to any local emergency or large event like Thunder over Louisville.

"Our mayor was like ‘go’ because this is not something you get to experience every day. If the opportunity is there, let's learn from it and let's bring those skill sets here to protect the citizens here,” he said.
