New automated CPR device saving lives in Hardin County

HARDIN CO, Ky. (WDRB) – They had no pulse, died and were brought back to life with a new tool at Hardin County EMS.

It's called the Lucas 2 Device, and during its first three days in use its already saved two lives.

At 100 pumps per minute, it performs perfect CPR.

“It works for the heart, it pumps for it,” said Hardin County EMS Supervisor Jamie Armstrong.

Since Hardin County EMS started using it on Wednesday, it’s resuscitated two patients.

“Very first day that we utilized it, it was on the streets, in the truck ... We were able to have a success,” Armstrong said.

Armstrong adds that even though it may seem no different than using your hands for CPR, the device can be much more consistent, for much longer.

“We’re human, we get tired and in turn the CPR is not as fast because there is a certain rate and depth we have to do CPR at to be adequate,” Armstrong said.

“Every second that CPR is not performed, that’s time lost, life lost, brain lost.”

Armstrong has been trying to get these lifesaving devices for several years, but has run into trouble because they come with a hefty price tag. At $15,000 per machine, Hardin County now has nine, one for each ambulance. Funding came from the county, and some may say they're too expensive.

“They are, however, can you put a price on someone's life?”

Armstrong added that beeping will alert paramedics if a patient is too small or large for the device, but he says it has a large range of use and has the potential to save many lives.

“I know how well the outcomes are and how well it does. It doesn't stop, it doesn't get tired."
