LMPD: Number of people shot in Louisville on the rise compared to previous years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The number of people being shot in Louisville is on the rise, according to Louisville Metro Police.

“We have seen 205 shootings on our community through the end of July,” said Chief Steve Conrad.

Conrad says that’s up from 142 at the end of July 2014 and three more people were shot in Louisville Sunday evening. A person was hit near S. 38th Street and W. Broadway around 6:30 pm. The victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

About a half hour later, a mother and her 17-year-old son were sitting on their porch near 43rd Street and Parker Avenue when they were shot by someone driving by. The mother was hit in the arm and her son was struck in the leg. Both were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.

“It just breaks my heart,” said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. “I don’t understand it. People don’t value human life.”

LMPD says no arrests have been made in either case.

“This will probably, unfortunately, be a record year as it relates to people being wounded by gunfire in metro Louisville,“ said Christopher 2X, community activist.

2X has helped organize the “We All We Got Hood 2 Hood” conversation tour. Some of the youngest gunshot wound survivors are participating, including 9-year-old Ki’Anthony Tyus, shot in April, and 15-year-old Jeffrey Roberts.

“At the end of the day we hope it's a motivator to get involved in some kind of way to deal with the advocacy end of this problem, which is much needed,” said 2X.

The group’s first appearance is Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at Indianan University Southeast.
