LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A Louisville woman is in the hospital recovering after police say a man tried to rape and kill her at her Highlands apartment.

Police say the alleged victim was attacked while home on her lunch break last Thursday. That's when 20-year-old Frederick Sheckles brutally attacked the woman, attempting to rape, sodomize and murder her -- according to police.

“When I first saw her, she said how could someone do this to me? I didn't deserve this,” said her aunt Iolanda.

Her aunt Iolanda and cousin Regina have been at her hospital bedside since.

"She said to me, 'I knew I was going to die. I had no more fight in me.' The only thing to do was to play dead and that's the only reason he quit stabbing her,” said Regina.

"We're grateful that she is alive. We thank God and the police department for their swift actions in catching the person who did this to her. But she's still in a lot of pain,” said Iolanda.

They say she's been in and out of surgery and has more than 14 stab wounds.

"Her neck, back and abdomen area,” said Iolanda.

Police say the victim was trying to leave her apartment Thursday but Sheckles was outside with a knife and a gun. They say Sheckles forced her back inside her apartment at gunpoint and fired one shot.

The victim tried to get away but police say Sheckles then grabbed her by her feet and dragged her back inside, telling her, "I really didn't want to do this."

The victim was able to call 911 but couldn't speak. A neighbor found her and called police and the victim was rushed into surgery.

Family members say the victim and Sheckles don't know each other but that he lives nearby. Her family says she's in stable condition but they say it will be a long time before she recovers.

"It's really hurtful for our whole family to have to deal with this,” Regina told WDRB News.

Regina says this is the second time this has happened to their family.

Their cousin Raquel Jackson was murdered at her apartment on Phyllis Avenue back in 2003.

"She was in her apartment and someone came into her home while she was 7 months pregnant and she didn't make it,” said Regina.

Jackson’s case is still unsolved.

Sheckles is charged with attempted murder, attempted rape, attempted sodomy and burglary.

If you'd like to donate to help the victim, the family has started a GoFundMe page.
