LEXINGTON, KY. (WDRB) – Some members of the Kentucky Wildcats football team have already made preseason predictions about the team’s success this season. On Monday, head coach Mark Stoops said it was time to back up those words.
“As I told them, if that's what motivates you, then put your money where your mouth is,” said Stoops at his weekly pregame press conference.
Stoops and the Wildcats open up the 2015 season Saturday at home against Louisiana-Lafayette. It will be the first game in the newly renovated Commonwealth Stadium.
“I think if you look back to the time that I arrived and you look at the three years of building this program and building this stadium, with the anticipation of this day, it’s really an exciting time to be opening this stadium,” said Stoops. “We get one opportunity for a first impression.”
And Stoops hopes it’s a good one. The Cats will be unveiling the 2015 version of the air raid offense, led by new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson.
“We are not reinventing the wheel,” said Stoops. “I think you’ll see a lot of sets that you’re used to seeing and you’ll see some news things.”
For the first game of the season, Stoops knows there’s a possibility his team will come out a little too fired up. But as he said Monday, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
“The guys have worked hard, the anticipation for a new season. I’d rather have to tell them, “Whoa” than “Giddy Up.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday in Lexington.
