LOUISVILLE, Ky, (WDRB) -- Simmons College begins its first school year recognized as a Historically Black College Monday.

School leaders say they encourage students to begin the year disciplined, knowing that the majority of them are the first in their families to attend college.

"Eighty-five percent of our student body it first generation college students -- 85 percent. So they don't have someone in their family who can reference what is college like," Simmons College President Dr. Kevin Cosby said.

Simmons became the 107th nationally-recognized Historically Black College in April.

A pep rally helped get students pumped up for the new year.
