LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- He was arrested 14 months after police say he killed a witness in a high profile murder case and now he's on trial in Louisville.

Orlando Gilmore is accused of murdering Gregory Sawyers in July of 2013. Sawyers was shot multiple times at Clay and Broadway in downtown Louisville. Even though Sawyers had his own lengthy criminal history, including wanton endangerment, inciting a riot and cocaine possession, his death raised questions as to whether his murder may have been connected to Ricky Kelly.

Ricky Kelly is one of the most notorious accused killers in Louisville. He's been a defendant in at least nine murder cases dating back to 1996.

Sawyers was supposed to testify against Kelly in what was then a federal murder case. Court documents show Sawyers had provided police with information in two different murder cases that authorities say Kelly was linked to.

Police still haven't said if that was Gilmore's motive.

Court records show Sawyers witnessed that murder, only to be gunned down in the same neighborhood eight years later.

A co-defendant, Odell Robinson, is also charged with Sawyers' murder. His trial is scheduled for later this month. Opening statement’s in Gilmore’s trial are set to begin Friday morning.
