Vietnam veteran honored for heroic actions

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Vietnam veteran was honored Friday for his heroic actions decades ago.

Ronald Mattson was officially presented the Distinguished Flying Cross on Sept. 4 in New Albany.

Congressman Todd Young attended the ceremony and presented Mattson with the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

"We are proud to give these medals to a Hoosier hero, to an American hero, to my friend Captain Ronald Mattson," Young said.

Mattson was given the awards for participating in an aerial flight in 1967 during the Vietnam War.

"It's important that we honor our nation's veterans and honor them in a very public way so that future generations of Americans are willing to serve and recognize that this country respects the sacrifices of our veterans," Young said.

The Distinguished Flying Cross was first awarded to Charles Lindbergh for his transatlantic crossing.
