LEXINGTON, KY. (WDRB) – It’s well known UK head coach Mark Stoops and South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier are good friends. During the off season, the two even went golfing together. They talked about life, family, and hobbies. What they did not talk about however was last year’s game between Kentucky and South Carolina.
“I’ve only been in this a short time as a head coach but I understand that what goes around comes around," said Stoops at his weekly press conference Monday. "I'm not one to be spouting off about anybody"
The Kentucky victory last season at Commonwealth Stadium was only UK’s second in 22 tries against the “Head Ball Coach.” The Wildcats rallied from 14 down in the fourth quarter for 45-38 victory. Stoops knows this is a game both Spurrier and the Gamecocks have been waiting for.
“I think us beating them last year, we've got to go into their place. It'll be a very, very difficult environment and a team that'll be hungry to get after us."
Beating USC (1-0) on the road won’t be easy. UK (1-0) comes in having lost 22 straight games on the road, a streak that dates back five years.
“I think that's been well documented: our struggles on the road and SEC opponents. This is going to be another great challenge, and it's a great opportunity for us. That's the big thing that we'll take from it. It's a great opportunity. “
UK hasn’t won at Williams Brice Stadium since 1999.
Kickoff Saturday from Columbia is at 7:30.
