LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – After scoring four goals in two games and breaking the USL record for goals in a single season, Louisville striker Matt Fondy has now been handed his fourth player of the week award.

Fondy notched his third hat trick of the season last week against the Harrisburg City Islanders to break the record of 20 goals set by Orlando City’s Kevin Molino. Fondy now has 22 goals on the season after scoring again against New York Red Bulls II in City’s 3-2 loss at Red Bull Arena.

“I don’t have enough good words to explain being next to this guy,” midfielder Guy Abend said of Fondy. “He’s obviously the best striker in the league. I think that if he goes to MLS next season he’s going to be one of the best strikers in the MLS.”

Fondy received 67 percent of the vote in USL’s poll for player of the week. Rochester goal keeper Brandon miller finished second with 20 percent of the vote.

Louisville’s captain had high expectations set for him at the beginning of the season, but many on the team have been complementary of his presence and his performance.

“He works every day. He just works his ass off during training – everything,” Abend said. “He’s really positive. He’s a good guy. He’s a good teammate. He’s a good captain.”

Right back Bryan Burke has connected with Fondy on several goals and sits just three assists away from setting a new single season assists record. The pair were friends before they joined Louisville City and their on-field chemistry has been praised.
