LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Thousands of dollars in unclaimed funds are waiting at the child support office.

The state recently converted to direct deposit for all child support payments. The problem is there are still hundreds of parents who have not filled out the proper paper work for the deposits to start.

"Hey, Angela, my name is Julie. I am calling from the child support office," Julie Smith said into the phone Tuesday at the Jefferson County Child Support office.

Julie Smith is on a mission. This is just one of dozens of phone calls and messages Smith has made and left.

"I have some really good news on your case, however, I cannot release that in a voicemail," she explained in her message.

She is trying to get thousands of dollars in unclaimed child support payments in the proper hands -- or bank accounts.

After one of the cases, Smith said, "I have no home phone, no work phone, no cellphone, no email."

Surprisingly, tracking down people to give them money is not an easy task.

"And when I called the first time, he actually hung up," said Smith.

Even after dialing dozens of wrong numbers, one custodial father thought it was a prank call -- until he received his money.

"He filled it out, I faxed it to Frankfort for him and in a couple of days, his money was released to him," said Smith.

The state recently converted to direct deposits for all child support payments. However, custodial parents have to fill out the proper paper work for the payments to start.

"They received three notices advising them that money would hold unless they completed direct deposit information within 60 days," said Joe Leavell, assistant director of Jefferson County Child Support Division.

Leavell said there are several options for the direct deposits.

"They have prepaid debit cards; they can have a checking account, savings account...etc."

And Leavell said even if you don't have money on hold, it is still important to fill out the direct deposit forms.

"It is very, very important to do that because even if the money is not being received or is not held currently, we are actively working every child support case we have

"My name is Julie Smith, I am calling from the child support office," said Smith on yet another voicemail.

Smith is still getting a lot of voice mails and wrong numbers, but said she is determined to keep trying.

"I am not going to give up, absolutely not. This money is here for a reason," Smith said.

You can get one of the forms for direct deposit forms here or at the child support office.
