U of L School of Medicine to be pilot site for training future doctors on LGBT concerns

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Officials at U of L say they are going to make medical care for transgendered persons a priority.

On Thursday morning, the President of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association spoke to physicians and students. The U of L School of Medicine is a pilot site for training future doctors on health concerns for the LGBT community. That community often experiences challenges seeking care in doctor's offices and hospitals.

Research show that leads to fewer people getting help when they need it.

"Frankly when you are providing services for transgender people, it's not just focused on hormonal care, it's not just focused on surgical care, it's focused on the totality of caring for a human being," said Dr. Henry Ng, president of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association.

The U of L School of Medicine will spend the next few months developing the formal curriculum which will be implemented for the 2016-17 school year.
