Indiana Attorney General proposes jail time for soliciting a prostitute

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Should those caught paying for sex be forced to spend time in jail? Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller thinks its something Indiana lawmakers should consider.

He says study suggests the demand for prostitution is cut by 80 percent when there's higher risk -- like going to jail.

"So I'm not talking about imprisonment, I'm talking about making sure everybody knows you'll go to jail," Zoeller said via phone Thursday. "Somebody's going to have to bail you out, the embarrassment, the risk of your wife, your marriage, your family, your job, your status in society."

Zoeller is asking state legislators to consider the idea as part of a summer committee meeting next week.

The attorney general says commercial sex problems like prostitution and human trafficking are much more prevalent than people want to believe.
