UK police charge Louisville man after drone crashes into Commonwealth Stadium

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- University of Kentucky Police have charged a Louisville man with second degree wanton endangerment after a drone quadcopter crashed into Commonwealth Stadium just before the UK vs. Louisiana Lafayette football game.

UK Police say 24-year-old Peyton Wilson, a University of Kentucky law student, was operating the drone while standing outside the stadium when it crashed into the suite level glass on the south side of the new Commonwealth Stadium.

Several fans stood below the suite when the incident occurred. No one was injured.

Authorities with the University of Kentucky Police Department are now taking action.

"We hope that this will set a precedence that this will not be tolerated at the University of Kentucky in these venues without prior approval," said Joe Monroe, the UK Police Chief.

One military parachutist says he had to make emergency maneuvers to avoid contact with the drone, which he says was 20 feet from his parachute.

Authorities plan to make some changes so that this doesn't happen again at Commonwealth Stadium.

"We're using this incident to evaluate what preventive measure we can actually increase to prevent this from happening again. One of the things that we're gonna do is we're actually going to put in our parking lot signs that say this is a no drone fly zone," said Chief Joe Monroe.

The FAA prohibits drones from being flown within 3 miles of a stadium one hour prior to, or one hour after an event with at least 30,000 people.

Authorities say the attendance at Saturday's game was more than 62,933.

UK police turned over the findings of this investigation to the FAA, which will determine if there should be additional violations and penalties.
