Police arrest New Albany High School student for having a gun at school

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A New Albany High School student was arrested Wednesday for having a gun in a backpack, according to New Albany Police.

"I'm sure they didn't want to alarm everybody and have everybody not send their kid to school but we also have the right to know," said one parent.

Police say school officials saw a post on social media indicating a student had shown a gun to other students.

"It's kind of scary to me," said freshman Brooklyn Schrink. "Because I walk through these halls throughout the entire day and I had no idea so it's really scary to not know its happening."

Officers arrested a student within an hour of the initial report, according to a release from NAPD. Police say no one was in danger.

“Safety for the students and staff of our schools is the primary focus of law enforcement. Any behavior regarding guns and schools will never be tolerated,” stated Chief Todd Bailey.

The suspect was charged with possession of a firearm on school property.

"I would like to discuss with my daughter," said Brooklyn's mother Angela. "Maybe she saw something or heard someone say something and if we had a conversation about it maybe she would be able to say 'yeah I saw this' and maybe help them solve it or get the issue resolved."
