Community members walk to honor first responders in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Just a day after the anniversary of September 11th, families walk to show their support for first responders.

They gathered at the Kentucky National Guard Armory Saturday morning and walked to Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

The walkathon and family festival is a way to honor, remember and serve first responders, military heroes and their families.

They also had police, fire and military vehicles as well as horse patrols on display.

Those who walked say the events of 9/11 and the heroes who gave their lives will never be forgotten.

“I was laying at home in bed when it happened,” said Kenneth Walker with UAW Local 862.  “And I was awakened to it -- to see the second plane fly in and then from at that point it kind of leaves a scar.  If you have any kind of sensibility about what happened, it leaves a scar on you and it's something you'll always hold onto."

The event was organized by Service for Peace which promotes peace in neighborhoods through community service.
