Local women rally against disrespect and abuse in childbirth

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- They say women's complaints to medical boards and hospitals are routinely dismissed and ignored.

That's why they joined thousands of others at 85 locations across the country on Saturday.

Dozens of women in Louisville rallied on Blankenbaker Parkway asking that mothers be treated with more respect during childbirth, including rights to full information and decision making in their care.

Event organizers say some women are degraded and disrespected by their doctors, especially if they're educated and asking questions.

"Really the goal is for women to really do their research,” said rally organizer Stephanie Boyd, “ask questions when they go to see their provider and understand that it's their right to be able to refuse any care that they do not want. And it's also their right to have respectful care in childbirth.”
