Top winners announced for second annual Louisville Dragon Boat Race

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Dragon boats took over the Ohio River Saturday morning.

More than 20 teams competed in the second annual Louisville Dragon Boat Racing Event.

The 20-person canoes are 40-feet long and decorated to look like dragons.

The teams participated in several races throughout the day.

Teams included high schoolers and local charity groups trying to raise funds for their programs.

Dr. Bill Dillon with Start the Heart Foundation, says his team is out to raise awareness.

"We teach hands-only CPR and we've taught over 10,000 people CPR in the last year,” said Dillon.  “(We) taught every freshman in Jefferson County last year, so it's been really great to be out here today."

The races are part of the Dragon Boat Festival-- which includes a full day of performances, Chinese cultural events and food.

Race Results:

  • Grand Champions – Team ARASHI (Racine, Wisconsin)
  • Top Louisville Champions – Start the Heart Foundation
  • Open Division Champions – Confucius Institute/Western Kentucky University
  • Charity Division Champions – St. Vincent de Paul (Louisville)
  • Scholastic Division Champions – Waggener High School
