LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- In an entertaining up and down affair, the UK alumni squad got the better of the group from North Carolina 122-115 before a crowd of announced attendance of 23,154 at Rupp Arena. The game, along with the upcoming John Calipari Fantasy Experience is expected to raise over a million dollars for various charities.
Playing in front of several of his Sacramento Kings executives, Big Man Demarcus Cousins found his inner guard, hitting 5-of-9 three-point shots en route to a game-high 33 points to go with 18 rebounds. He said he thought he was shooting twos and was asked about John Calipari holding him back during his season at Kentucky.
"I don't want to get into that too much, he had his day," said Cousins. "But yeah, he held me back a little bit."
Cousins was also asked for his thoughts on the Kings heading into this season.
"I'm extremely excited. I think we have potential," said Cousins. "Once we come together we are going to be a scary team in the West. A lot of people are throwing us under the rug, but I think we are going to surprise a lot of people this year."
Terrence Jones had 22 points for the UK team. Recent Wildcats Devin Booker and Trey Lyles each had 14. The Carolina squad was led by Harrison Barnes of the World Champion Golden State Warriors. He hit 14-of-30 shots, including 5-of-12 from three for 39 points. James Michael McAdoo added 20 to go with 16 rebounds.
It was a great way to cap a special weekend for new Basketball Hall of Famer John Calipari.
"They all came back to be with family and with the fans and all that and they understand the relationships," said Calipari. "They want to be around each other and they know that we look out for one another. And on top of it they raised a lot of money for a good thing. It's a great thing to do and let me praise North Carolina, obviously some of the guys were not able to come, but they played and Harrison Barnes wants us to go back there next year, which we might do. Maybe we take our team to North Carolina and do the same thing to raise money for charity that way."
