New Albany police, schools on alert after hacker posts threats on social media

Posted: Updated:

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Police are on high alert in New Albany following threats against local schools posted by a hacker on social media.

Authorities say the threats are very similar and probably related to another threat from a hacker earlier this year in New Albany.

So far, police have received over a hundred tips from community members. Officers have increased their presence today at area schools -- and provided extra patrols.

Chief Todd Bailey says the hacker -- who is from out of town -- posted a threat on Facebook last Friday, threatening a "slaughter" at New Albany pre-schools specifically.

Police say they've been talking with schools during the investigation to make sure students and staff are safe.

"We will eventually let the public know the specifics of the case but up until that point, what we need people to understand is that there's a perpetrator out there that we need to arrest and at that point in time, prosecute," Bailey said.

Federal authorities are assisting with the investigation.

The case from earlier this year is still open, and no arrests have been made.
