FAMILY: Penway Avenue shooting victim had been paralyzed from the waist down

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A disabled man is dead after an early morning shooting in southwest Louisville.

Friends and family who knew the victim say he was paralyzed from the waist down, and was in a wheelchair. Family members tell WDRB News he was 25-year-old Austin Turner. He had a six-year-old son.

Police say they were called to Penway Avenue, near Cane Run Road, around 2:30 a.m., when neighbors heard gunshots. They found a man who had been shot multiple times -- outside the house where family members say he lived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several children live on the block where the victim was found.

"Is it safe for my kids to come out and play?" asked neighbor Latrice Langdon. "Because bullets don't have a name, they go anywhere and anybody could be a victim - an innocent child or grown man, a woman, anybody could be a victim. It's just crazy, everybody's losing family members behind craziness. I guess it's because there's no community centers, there's nothing for these kids to do."

Police towed a silver car from the scene and removed several bags of evidence.

Investigators have no suspects at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the LMPD crime tipline at 574-LMPD (5673). Callers can remain anonymous.
