BEVIN: Rowan County clerk controversy was unnecessary

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Matt Bevin says the Rowan County Clerk controversy was unnecessary.

The Republican candidate for governor spoke with the Young Professional Association of Louisville Tuesday morning. He says he's glad Kim Davis made a compromise that will keep her out of jail, and allow her to stick to her religious beliefs.

Bevin says the governor and the Attorney General should have accommodated Davis' religious convictions.

"This should never have become the situation that it is," Bevin said. "It needs to be addressed. But even what Kim Davis is doing is not a solution. It's her making decisions and nobody with enough intestinal fortitude to say one way or the other whether this is even legally appropriate or necessary."

Both the governor and Attorney General Jack Conway, who is running for governor, say they support the General Assembly coming up with a solution to the problem, but do not believe it requires a special session.
