LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Zanzabar, the bar, restaurant and music venue, plans to expand its building at 2100 S. Preston Street by nearly 50 percent, according to a zoning change application filed Monday with Louisville Metro Planning & Design.

Antz Wettig, who owns Zanzabar with his brother Jon, said the bar's live music will be housed within the new space, allowing the area where the bar's current stage sits to be used exclusively as restaurant space.

"This new capacity is going to allow us to negotiate with a whole different level of artist out there," Wettig said.

The expanded space will be able to fit more patrons for shows, Wettig said, but he declined to discuss capacity issues, saying it's still early in the city planning process.

The addition of 1,466 square feet would be in the southwest corner of the building, which is currently 3,036 square feet, according to a site plan. The bar’s current outdoor seating area would remain.

Another goal is to accommodate customers who just want to eat a burger, play pinball or watch a football game on nights when a popular band is playing, Wettig said.

"It’s heartbreaking to look at your regulars and say 'hey, we’ve got a sold out show tonight,'" Wettig said.

Now 6 years old, Zanzabar combines lunch, dinner, music and an arcade.

"We never really realized every one of those bullet points was going to take off like crazy," Wettig said.

The owners are also asking for a zoning change for the adjoining property at 2104 S. Preston Street, which is residential but primarily used as storage for Zanzabar.
