LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- DNA evidence helped lead to the arrest of a suspect wanted for brutally beating and attacking a 12-year-old boy in his home 15 years ago.

According to Indiana State Police, 42-year-old Eric Jones allegedly broke into a home on Commerce Drive in Salem. While inside, police say Jones encountered a 12-year-old boy who told police he came home to find Jones inside. After the boy told him his mother was not at home, Jones allegedly "battered and sexually assaulted" the victim.

"Since then, we've had a solid investigation, nonstop. We had interviewed numerous people, people we thought were suspects but we just were not able to find the person responsible for the crime," said Sgt. Jerry Goodin, ISP.

After the assault, police say Jones heard someone coming to the home ran from the home. Police had no leads or suspects at the time.

Investigators with Indiana State Police were unable to find the person who assaulted the victim. Crime scene investigators did find several items of evidence.

The investigation was considered a "cold case," until 15 years later on July 24, 2015. That's when Indiana State Police Detective Bill Wibbels, who had assumed responsibility for the case, was advised by the Indiana State Police Laboratory that they had found DNA from evidence collected at the scene that matched Jones' DNA.

"Technology has progressed so much in that field, we were able to make a match," said Goodin.

Detective Wibbels requested an arrest warrant for Jones through the Washington County courts. The warrant was issued on Sept. 15. Jones was already incarcerated at the Scott County Jail on other charges, and has now been charged with child molesting, a Class A Felony.

Jones is still in the Scott County Jail.
