LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Family, friends and fellow officers gathered on the North Hardin High School Football field Wednesday night to remember fallen KSP Trooper Joseph Ponder.

His friends and community knew him as Cameron and Supporting Heroes organized an event at his alma mater to remember him. The 31-year-old had just graduated from KSP's Academy in January.

He was shot and killed Sunday night during a traffic stop on I-24 in Western Kentucky.  The suspect was eventually shot and killed by police.

Ponder graduated from North Hardin High and was still giving back, visiting with students as recently as last month.

Deputy Jeff Brangers, who went to high school with Ponder, is organizing Blue Lights Across Hardin County and hopes residents will show their support by turning on a blue porch light.

"We're represented by the blue light, the thin blue line, and anytime we have a fallen officer especially one that hits close to home the blue lights represent  that loss," Brangers said before the vigil.

Deputy Brangers is asking people turn on the blue lights until Ponder is laid to rest.

The vigil was an effort to support Ponder and all law enforcement.
