LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say they've arrested a man after he tried to blame a domestic violence shooting on a 2-year-old child.

According to an arrest warrant, the incident took place on May 9.

Police say 23-year-old Donald Szypulski had a loaded handgun while he was with a woman and a 2-year-old child.

According to the warrant, Szypulski claims the child grabbed the loaded handgun from his hand and fired the handgun, resulting in the woman being shot in the pelvis. She suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to University Hospital.

But according to police, the Kentucky State Crime Lab tested both Szypulski and the child for gunshot residue and determined that Szypulski was the only one with gunshot residue on his hands.

A warrant was issued for Szypulski's arrest on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and he was taken into custody on Thursday, Sept. 17. He is charged with first degree assault.
