LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — ESPN is reporting that former University of Louisville star Montrezl Harrell has signed a three-year guaranteed deal with the Houston Rockets worth $3.1 million.

Harrell was selected with the 32nd overall pick in the second round for the Rockets, and his signing was a bit more complicated than most because Houston is operating close to a hard salary cap.

The club reportedly gave Harrell the option of a one-year deal at a larger salary, with the option of becoming a free-agent when the cap increases next year, or a longer-term deal with a smaller annual salary.

In choosing the latter, Harrell joins an organization that was encouraged by his 16.5 points and eight rebounds per game in the Las Vegas Summer league.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who also first reported Harrell’s contract terms, also says the forward has signed a multi-year sponsorship deal with Nike.

Harrell made headlines early this week with news that he had helped pull a motorist from a smoking car after a wreck near the U of L campus Saturday night.

Harrell hasn’t spoken to the media about the incident, but said in a video post via the “Uninterrupted” platform, “I ran over there with a couple more civilians, just trying to help. We were talking to the man who was inside asking if he could unlock the door. So at that point in time we had to decide what we wanted to do because the truck had started to smoke and we felt like in that situation it was possible that it was going to blow and we definitely didn’t want that to happen. So I kicked the window and it cracked a little bit, then another one of the guys with me kicked it all the way through. I ran across the street to a local food establishment and got a fire extinguisher. . . If you can lend a helping hand to somebody, it’s always good to do it. I just tried to do my part and help somebody out.”
