LOUISVILLE. Ky. (WDRB) – A coalition of a multitude of faiths gathered at the Islamic Center of Louisville on Friday to help clean up graffiti.

“We need to recognize a heinous act took place some 48 hours ago in the holy place that has been in our community for over 30 years,” Mayor Greg Fischer said.

That “heinous act” was a series of scrawled red graffiti on the outside walls of the Islamic center. Some of the messages contained curse words, some racial slurs and others were direct attacks on the Islamic faith.

“You know out of all the adversity, sometimes good comes out,” said Dr. Waheed Ahmad of the Louisville Islamic center. “I sit here, right here. I can't believe it.”

A sea of people gathered to show support and help clean up the mess.

“We wanted to come and show our support for the Muslim community here in Louisville,” Jeff Topham said. “To show that there are lots of people here that want to show them kindness and support.”

“Maybe we get to paint,” Fischer said. “Maybe we don't, but we are here giving testament to brotherhood, sisterhood, to the values of our country.”

Leaders at the Islamic Center say it happened around 7 p.m. It didn’t take long for leaders to hear from the community.

“I'm a little bit overwhelmed right now as you can see,” said Muhammad Babar with the Islamic Center. “I just want to tell you that once we are done here, this journey should not stop. It’s a fraternity of love between different faiths."

Leaders at the Islamic Center says the response has been enormous, and the show of support Friday afternoon is just another step in create positive relations between people of different faiths.

“You see a lot of people who came and just wanted to offer some kindness and compassion,” Topham said.
