Louisville Pride Festival takes over Bardstown Road

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Saturday was a big day for Louisville's gay community.

The first annual Louisville Pride Festival kicked off Saturday morning on Bardstown Road.

Volunteers say the Highlands has such a large population of gays and those who identify as transgender, so it was the perfect hosting spot.

The goal is to celebrate diversity within the LGBT community, a group that's made headlines recently following the legalization of gay marriage and more acceptance of those who are transgender.

"This year has been big for the LGBT community and the allies," volunteer Amelia Runyon said. "But most of all, as Kentuckians, I think it's really awesome the steps that we've taken this year."

Louisville Pride included live musical performances, drag shows and will end tonight at 11 p.m. with a fashion show dance party.
