LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - The Shirley's Way 5K ran through Iroquois Park on Saturday.

Mike Mulrooney started Shirley's Way back in 2013 following the death of his mother. Saturday marked his third 5K event.

His organization helps people with cancer who can't pay their rent or utilities, or buy food or medication.

Right now, Shirley's Way is focused the family of a 7-year-old girl with Leukemia

"We've paid their house payment every year this year, kept their utilities on," Mulrooney said. "And after her treatments, they've got bills in excess of $300,000 for Leukemia treatments. And a portion of that may be covered by insurance, but a large portion won't. So they've got a burden they'll never be able to repay."

About 300 runners showed up for the event Saturday, and that is just one of their big events of the year.
