BBB warns consumers about bogus 'BBB Sweepstakes'

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Better Business Bureau in Louisville has received calls from consumers about a “BBB Sweepstakes” that they have won. The BBB wants to assure consumers that this is a scam so they can protect themselves from potential fraud.

So far there are variations of the scam. Some scammers will claim they are “with the BBB and have a certified check for their sweepstakes winnings.”

Consumers have also reported scammers claiming to be “CEO of the Better Business Bureau sweepstakes” with “a $75,000 check in-hand” for them. One consumer was tipped off when the caller wanted to meet them at a gas station to award the prize.

There are currently no BBB sweepstakes or contests with any prizes. If “the BBB” calls offering cash or prizes, consumers should be instantly skeptical and take the following steps:
1. Ask which BBB they are from and for a phone number where they can be reached.
2. Hang up immediately if the caller will not provide that information.
3. If they do provide any information, write it down and hang up.
4. Contact the Louisville BBB at (502) 583-6546 or info@bbbkyin.org to report the scam.

The Better Business Bureau is a non-profit organization dedicated to trust in the marketplace. BBB’s mission is to promote the highest ethical relationships between businesses and consumers, focusing on advertising and selling practices. BBB receives no government assistance.
