LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say a Shively city council member was arrested for driving under the influence after Monday night's council meeting.

Ronnie Wathen spoke with WDRB at the meeting about the city's plan to send $100 checks to property owners. Sgt. Josh Myers with Shively Police says officers at city hall saw Wathen take thumbtacks from a bulletin board after the meeting and put them under the tires of another council member.

Myers said officers went to Wathen's home to ask him about the incident and arrested him for driving under the influence.

Wathen is charged with DUI and attempted criminal mischief. He is also a former Shively fire chief.

The councilman was part of a heated discussion over the $100 "stimulus" checks at Monday night's city council meeting. Wathen was opposed to the plan and believed the money would be better spent on sidewalks, parks and other improvements.

Wathen spoke for 3-4 minutes before Mayor Sherry Conner called his comments "uncalled for."
