Hardin County soldier surprises his children at school

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Hardin County soldier and dad surprised all three of his children on Wednesday.

The children are all students in Hardin County Schools and thought their dad was in Kuwait. That's why it was a pretty big surprise when he showed up on Wednesday afternoon.

"Is Travis Field in here somewhere?" asked Lt. Col. Chris Field as he walked into his son's classroom.

If life is full of surprises, this was a big one.

"How ya doing, buddy," said Lt. Col. Field to his son.

"As soon as I heard...is Mr. Travis Field here...I was like, okay, what are they calling me for, turn around, I see my dad and I'm just like oh my goodness," said Travis Field, Lt. Col. Field's son.

The children are students at John Hardin High, Bluegrass Middle and Rineyville Elementary.

Lt. Col. Field made the rounds. He surprised them one by one.

"Turned around and he was there and it was just crazy," said Cecilia Field, Lt. Col. Field's daughter.

Travis said, "I was just like: mind blown."

"We haven't seen him in so long and it was just really a great surprise," said Cecilia.

But not everyone in the Field family is surprised.

"We just knew that this would be a pleasant surprise for them and we were excited about their reactions to seeing their dad like that," Lt. Col. Field's wife Melissa said.

It has been more of a secret for Melissa and not one that was easy to keep.

"We had to come up with a code to talk about him coming home," she explained.

Meanwhile, mom may have to answer some questions.

"Yes, lots of questions," said Travis.

But the children left school a little early and had plans for their dad.

"Hang out as much as we can with him. Well, I still want to go to musical theater," said Travis.

Lt. Col. Field is now stationed in Fort Knox. That means he is home for good this time.
