LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police say a mother has been arrested after she abandoned her 7-year-old son overnight while she went to the store.

According to an arrest report, officers were sent to the area of Shepherdsville Road and Fern Valley Road just after 3 a.m. Thursday after a passing motorist found a 7-year-old boy wandering the street in his underwear. Police say the boy did not know the spelling of his name, and could only provide a partial date of birth.

Jefferson County Public Schools was able to provide emergency contact information for the child.

When police knocked on the door of the child's home, no one answered, despite repeated attempts. Police say they eventually were able to find a phone number for the child's mother, 31-year-old Lawonna Dickerson.

According to the arrest report, Dickerson answered her phone when officers called, and told them she was at the store and would come right home.

"The juvenile stated that he had woke up and looked for his mother, checked all the rooms and closets and then left the residence to try and find her," the arrest report states.

Police say Dickerson, "deserted the minor under circumstances endangering the life and health and clearly intended to abandon him."

Dickerson was arrested and charged with abandonment of a minor.

The boy was released to his biological father.
