LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kosair Children's Hospital just got some horsepower to fight childhood cancer.

Children affected by cancer got to a have a little fun Thursday morning, dipping their hands into colorful paint and leaving their handprints on an SUV.

It's all to celebrate a $250,000 grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Doctors will use the money for immunotherapy research on certain pediatric tumors. They say they've had some encouraging results in their research.

"If it's performed on more patients and our expectation is that we can actually design a therapy that when a child is diagnosed with cancer, can be used at the end of their therapy can prevent the cancer from coming back again," said Dr. Kenneth Lucas, Chief of Pediatric Hematology / Oncology.

"The research is focused on immunotherapy for certain types of pediatric tumors," a news release from Norton Health Care states. "Vaccinations made of the patient's own blood cells are labeled with cancer proteins found on the surface of tumor cells. Before receiving the vaccine, the patient receives low doses of chemotherapy to actually increase the number of proteins on the cancer cells. When the vaccine is given, the tumor cells are more susceptible to being killed by the immune cells."

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Kosair Children’s Hospital is one of 45 recipients across the country to receive a 2015 Hyundai Scholar Grant, according to the news release. In all, Hope On Wheels will award $10.5 million in research grants this September in honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Kosair Children’s Hospital has now received $325,000 from Hope On Wheels since 2013.
