Police asking for help to find mother of newborn found outside Christ's Way Christian Church

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A newborn baby was found abandoned outside a Kentuckiana church Thursday -- and police need your help finding the child's mother.

He is okay, but police believe the child's mother needs medical attention.

"Obviously an unsupervised natural birth comes with some medical complications -- that's demonstrated by the condition of the baby, the baby was mildly dehydrated," said Sgt. Andrew Richmond of the North Vernon Police Department.

The child was discovered just after 5 o'clock on Thursday afternoon. Police say a member of Christ's Way Christian Church found the child on the side of the church. The child is a white male and police believe he was less than 12 hours old when abandoned. Indiana does have a safe haven law, however, police say it was not followed in this case.

"Obviously, the law is set up in place to protect someone so that they don't feel like they have to dump a child off," said Sgt. Richmond. "But it is also set up so that the baby is left in an area that is well-regulated and has people on staff 24 hours a day."

Richmond said investigators' first priority is making sure the mother gets medical attention. They have not ruled out charges against her, however.
