Overlook upgrades taking shape at Iroquois Park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A million dollar view is in the making at Iroquois Park.

“I used to run cross country and we would run up there sometimes,” Miranda Jones said. She added it wasn't too inviting. “There was a nice view but it looked like it had been abandoned and hadn't been worked on in a while,” Jones said.

But construction equipment and stakes in the ground prove that's all changing.

“You'll be up a little bit higher so you'll be able to see out a little better,” said Metro Parks Director Marty Storch.

And from Kentucky to Indiana there's a lot to see.

“You see the knobs, you see downtown, you see Churchill Downs, U of L, Sherman Minton -- it’s a beautiful place to be up on top here,” Storch said.

Only now Storch said it will have a softer feel. Along with the cosmetic improvements, Metro Parks is also working on drainage and erosion problems at the overlook.

“And so we moved it back a little bit, softened the slope some, took a lot of thinking and doing and having people come together,” Storch said.

The Olmstead Parks Conservancy raised $500,000 for the project and the city matched the amount.

While the construction has the overlook closed for the time being it won't last forever and will reopen as winter transitions into spring.

“Some of the dedicated users they were very upset in the beginning because you're taking something away from them,” Storch said.

“I think it will be a lot better. I think it will be a nice place that people can actually visit instead of not wanting to go up there due to the fact that it was kind of falling apart,” Jones said.

“I would say the best view is right here in Iroquois Park of all of Kentuckiana,” Storch said.

While construction is on time and the North Overlook is expected to reopen in March or April, park officials say staying on track depends on the weather.
