New playground in the Portland neighborhood aimed at keeping kids safe and engaged

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - Volunteers are breathing new life into the Portland Promise Center.

More than 200 people spent Saturday building a new playground on Baird Street, mixing concrete and hauling mulch.

They also set up some tree benches and created places for people to get in the shade.

The previous playground was more than 15 years old.

Organizers who helped with the project want to make sure growing kids stay active and safe.

"The old playground here wasn't a safe, engaging playground for the kids to play on," organizer Brittany Riley said. "So instead, they were playing in the street. So now we're able to build this incredible, super-engaging, super-challenging playground."

The new playground will eventually serve more than 7,500 kids and their families.

The design is based on children's drawings submitted in July.
