Man sets gas pump on fire trying to kill spider

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man who set a gas pump on fire in Michigan says he was trying to kill a spider.

It happened on Sept. 25 in Center Line, Michigan, which is just outside Detroit. That's when the man says he saw a spider crawling on his fuel tank, and since he says he is deathly afraid of spiders, he pulled out his lighter and decided to burn it.

Susan Adams, who works at the station, kept calm and hit the automatic stop button to halt the flow of fuel.

The man grabbed a nearby extinguisher and put out the flames before firefighters arrived.

"He was sorry," Adams said. "He apologized, he was sorry, he didn't know and ... it's just one of those things that happened. Stupidity. That's all I can call it. Pure stupidity."

Luckily - no one was hurt.
