SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Thirteen students were taken to the hospital after two school buses crashed in Shelbyville Tuesday morning.

The two buses collided on Rocket Lane, which runs alongside Shelby County High School. A district spokesman says classes had already started when one bus was being used to transport students from Shelby County High School to the district's technology center about a quarter of a mile down the road.

He says that is common practice during rainy weather.

Spokesman Ryan Allan says one bus was waiting to turn out of a parking lot; the other bus was waiting to turn in, and there was confusion about which bus had the right-of-way. The buses crashed, and the bus with no students on board flipped on its side.

Students on the other bus were taken to the school gym and checked out by emergency medical personnel.

"About 13 of them have been transported," said Allan. "The reason we transport those is because if there is any kind of complaint or soreness or any kind of worry at all, we err on the side of precaution and transport all those students."

Allan says he does not believe any of the injuries are serious.

A message on the school district's website says all parents of students involved in the wreck have been notified. The driver of the bus that flipped was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

The school district promises to investigate the cause of the crash.
