Tourism officials unveil new design for Louisville's downtown convention center

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Iconic: that's how some are describing what will be the new and improved downtown convention center.

The new design was unveiled this morning.

The price tag is $180 million, and tourism officials say it's well worth the investment.

The new design replaces much of the concrete and stone of the current convention center with glass, making it much more open and inviting. But more importantly, it adds some 200,000 square feet of contiguous meeting space. Both the governor and mayor say that will make Louisville a much more desirable convention destination.

Of course the renovation means the convention center will close for two years starting next August. But tourism officials say most business will be redirected to other local facilities. They say any short-term pain will be worth the long term gain.
