LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Red and blue police lights lit up the early morning darkness on Wednesday.

“I can't believe it,” said Dorris Daniel.

Dorris Daniel and Robin Burgin found out their neighbor, 41-year-old Annoqunette Starr had been shot.

“Somebody told me she got killed. I said oh no. I just talked to her the other day,” Daniel said.

“She was the most kind-hearted lady I had ever me,” Burgin said.

Police say Starr was found with several gunshot wounds in her apartment on Rodman Street near Churchill Downs. They add her boyfriend, Carlos Stone, confessed to police at a nearby White Castle restaurant.

“There were some officers in that location. He flagged those officers down and told them that he had just killed someone in his house,” said Lt.Todd Kessinger with the LMPD Homicide Unit.

That's when officers found Starr's body as well as a child in the home.

“The 10-year-old was the niece of the victim. She was unaware of the incidents that had taken place. We brought her back and talked to her. She was aware there was an argument earlier in the day, but she wasn't aware her aunt was deceased,” Lt. Kessinger said.

The news left neighbors in disbelief.

“On Sunday she had a big birthday bash for her niece... very loving person,” Burgin said.

The victim's family seems unable to escape the violence. Police say Starr's brother was involved in a murder in the Portland neighborhood back in January.

Hours after Starr's death, in a separate case, police responded to the Preston Oaks Apartments on Crafty Drive. Police say Alune Badu stabbed Hanne Rassoul to death.

“From what we've been able to gather, it was an unprovoked attack to where the one roommate stabbed and killed the other roommate,” Lt. Todd Kessinger said.

Police say a third roommate grabbed the knife from his brother and called police. All three of the men are from Africa.

Police say there have been 59 murders so far this year. Last year at this time there were 39 murders.

Both Stone and Badu are charged with murder and are being held on $250,000 cash bonds. They are expected in court Thursday morning.
