Two teens charged with attempted robbery, attempted murder of Jeffersontown police officer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Jeffersontown Police have charged two teenagers with attempted robbery and attempted murder on a police officer following an incident Thursday night.

Police Chief Rick Sanders says the two teens had advertised an iPhone for sale on Instagram and had arranged to meet the buyers -- a father, mother and their daughter -- at the Stoneybrook Kroger around 11 p.m.

"When they got to the Kroger, the teens asked them to go to a residence off Stoneybrook Drive and when the family got there, they approach the car and demand the money," Sanders said. "The father refused to give them the money, so one of the teens reaches into the car to grab it. After a brief struggle, one of the teens pulls out a stolen 9 mm handgun and fires five rounds into the car."

Sanders said the family called 911 and met up with police officers, giving them a detailed description of the two teenage suspects.

"One of our officers was able to identify one of the teens and went over to his residence at the Arbor Place Apartments to stake it out," Sanders said. "When we saw him and attempted to arrest him, he took off and we chased him into the woods. While he was being chased, the kid reached into backpack, we think to grab the weapon, and at that point he was tackled and subdued."

Sanders said one of his officers was injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

The two suspects were charged as juveniles, but Sanders said his department will pursue adult charges on both of them.

They are being held at the Louisville Metro Youth Detention Center.
