Police investigating fatal shooting on Marret Avenue

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- One man is dead after a fatal shooting in the Smoketown neighborhood.

The shooting took place at approximately 12:15 p.m. Monday, on Marret Avenue, near S. Preston Street, according to Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell.

Some neighbors were so afraid that they didn't want to go on camera to talk about what they saw.

They were worried someone would retaliate.

Witnesses say they heard popping that sounded like firecrackers at first, but when they looked outside they saw a group of people running from the scene.

Neighbors say it was a group of guys.

Police say a black man in his 20's was found shot to death between two buildings.

Police were at the scene for much of the day canvassing the area and talking with neighbors and witnesses.

Authorities say this is the 60th homicide of the year.

And really the number's not what concerns me because even if was just one, it's one too many. And certainly, one thing we cannot legislate and that's morality, but we hope that in time with all the education that's out here that people take their aggressions out in another way, but this appears to be another senseless murder that's happened here,” said LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell.

The coroner has not yet released the name of the man killed in today's shooting.

Police say they have no suspects at this time but they do say a man showed up at University Hospital today with a gunshot wound. They've been questioning him to see if he's linked to this shooting.

If you have any information, they're asking you to call the police tipline at 574-LMPD.
