LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A hearing today could start the process of closing down the Economy Inn on Bardstown Road for good.

Health inspectors are presenting their findings from a recent "surprise inspection" at today's hearing.

The hotel scored a 48 out of 100 during that inspection, and the health department issued a notice of intent to suspend operations. Violations included roaches, dirty sheets and gnats.

The hotel has failed several health inspections over the past several years and we just learned it failed another follow up inspection on Oct. 6 with a score of 82.

Health department officials say they found a live cockroach in one of the rooms.

The Economy Inn has also seen its share of crime -- there were 1,400 police runs to the hotel in 2014.

Just last month, the hotel's owner promised to spend $750,000 renovating the motel and said he has tackled every problem head on.

"Any issues that have gone on, we rectify them," said general manager Avis Zoma. "If they aren't happy with their stay, we'll move them to another room. We've even been known to refund rooms."

After today's hearing, the state will issue a report within five days. The city will either follow the recommendation or take action of its own.

If the Economy Inn's owners don't like the decision, they will have 10 days to appeal to the state.

The hearing got started this morning at 9 o'clock.
