General Mills recalls nearly 2 million boxes of cereal mistakenly labeled 'gluten-free

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- General Mills is recalling 1.8 million boxes of the Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios labeled as gluten-free.

The company says issues off-loading flour at a California facility may have caused the contamination of four days' worth of that factory's product.

The company is in the process of converting five Cheerio varieties to gluten-free.

This recall affects Honey Nut Cheerios and classic Cheerios in the yellow box with the "Better if used by date of July 14, 2016."

Company officials say the boxes marked "gluten-free" may contain wheat.

General Mills ordered boxes still at warehouses and on store shelves to be returned.

Customers can return the product to the store where they bought it for a refund or exchange.
