84 firefighters killed in the US in 2014 honored in Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) - A ceremony was held at Jefferson Square Park on Tuesday morning, honoring the 84 firefighters killed in the line of duty across the country last year.
Tuesday was proclaimed Fallen Firefighters' Memorial Day in Louisville, part of Fire Prevention Week.
This comes during Fire Prevention Week, a time dedicated to showing people how best to guard against fires in their homes.
"Install a fire detector if you don't have one ... test your fire detector if you do have one," said Doug Recktenwald, Louisville Fire Executive Asst. Chief.
"Perform a fire drill at work or at home. Never leave cooking food unattended. Keep your home or work free of clutter, especially around appliances. Don't overload your electrical outlets. Which of these actions can you take to truly honor the firefighters on this memorial?"
The theme of this year's Fire Prevention Week, aimed at keeping smoke detectors up to date, is "Hear the Beep where you Sleep."
