EKU cancels classes through Friday in response to threat

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Eastern Kentucky University has decided to cancel classes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in response to a thereat that was made against the school.

The threat has nearly emptied the campus in Richmond, Kentucky while police investigate.  Police issued an alert the morning of Oct. 5, and increased security after a message was found on a bathroom wall in the Powell building, threatening to "Kill all by 10/8/15." Now, the school is canceling class for the rest of the week. University officials are not commenting about whether something changed to make them decide to cancel classes.

There is no evidence of immediate danger, but an escalation in the threat originating from social media. That is according to the student newspaper, The Eastern Progress. It also says police are looking into reports of threatening notes left in dorms, but police have not found any. "To allow law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation of the continuing threat and ensure the safety of our campus community, all Eastern Kentucky University campuses will cancel classes, beginning today, October 7th, 2015, at 10 a.m. and will close Thursday, October 8th and Friday October 9th, 2015," the notice states. "Essential services will remain open and police presence around the campus will continue to be increased. Some special events may continue as planned with increased security presence."

Closing down campus will allow police to conduct a full investigation. Many students are heading home.  "I don't appreciate being told that I can't go to my classes that I actually enjoy going to and we're all frustrated and nobody find this amusing or funny in any form or fashion," said Katie Scott, SGA President.

The university is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.

EKU's home football game Saturday night is being moved to Georgetown College.
