Semple Elementary School students participate in International Walk to School Day

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- This morning, 500 students from Semple Elementary School participated in International Walk to School Day.

The goal is to raise awareness about pedestrian safety. Officials say it's important to practice walking with children to teach them to be safe.

"What parents need to know is that until a child is about 10 years old, their eyes and their brains have not developed enough to be able to truly judge the speed of oncoming cars, or how far away they are," said Erika James of Safe Kids Louisville. "So even though they may act like they know how to cross the street, physically they should not be allowed to do that without a trusted adult."

This is the 14th year for International Walk to School Day.

More than 250,000 students across the country were participating in events throughout the day.
